Corralejo is a former fishing village turned resort, between the dunes natural park and Lobos Island. Things to do in Corralejo, in short: the dunes, the boat to Lobos, a surf or kite lesson and, with kids between spring and autumn, the island's only water park. It's the best base for active types, couples and anyone who doesn't want to hire a car; for a small, quiet village, El Cotillo is the better fit.
Corralejo dunes: what to see, the rules and the road
The Parque Natural de Corralejo is a 2.5 × 10.5 km coastal strip, protected since 1994 and covering more than 2,600 hectares: the largest dune field in the Canaries. The sand is crushed shell, and to the south come the volcanic badlands (malpaís) and Montaña Roja (about 300 m).
You visit by parking up and walking. Along the sea are the Grandes Playas, where, as the tourist office points out, nudism is common. Check the flags before swimming and don't assume there's a lifeguard. Don't take sand or stones away.
The dunes road (FV-104)
The road through the park is the FV-104, the old coast road; the FV-1 is the new dual carriageway that runs inland. As of today it's still open, with a 50 km/h limit, but closing it to through traffic is an environmental condition of the new dual carriageway: that's planned for when the works reach the INPESCASA roundabout, after which it would serve only as beach access. It already closed temporarily in 2018. Before you count on it, check its status with the Cabildo (https://www.cabildofuer.es/) or the tourist office.
Corralejo beaches and water sports: surfing and kitesurfing
For wind there are two beaches: Flag Beach, with a sandy bottom, fine for every level and the best place to learn to kite in spring and summer; and Playa del Burro, with a volcanic-rock bottom, which needs some experience, is sailed at low or mid tide and has no facilities. For experienced surfers there's El Hierro (Majanicho), the island's most famous break: reef, from September to May.
The schools are mobile: they teach on whichever beach has the best conditions that day, a van ride away. If non-surfing family members are coming along, ask where you're going.
| School | Direct price | Group size |
|---|---|---|
| Aloha Surf Academy | €70 a lesson; €210 for three; €320 for five | max. 6 per instructor |
| Corralejo Surf School | €50 for one day; €135 for three days | not published |
| Surf Passion School | €50 a lesson; private €80 (1) or €120 (2) | max. 4 per instructor |
| Flag Beach Watersports | in its booking engine | kite: 4 per instructor on the beach, 2 in the water |
For almost the same price the group can be twice as big: ask about the ratio. Waves from October to April, wind from May to September. More in surfing in Fuerteventura and Corralejo surf schools.
The harbour: boat to Lobos and ferry to Lanzarote
Boat to Lobos
Permit first, boat second. The permit is free, issued by the Cabildo (the island council) at https://lobospass.com/ and released 5 days ahead; there are two 4-hour slots (10:00–14:00 and 14:00–18:00) and never more than 200 people on the islet at once. Afternoons sell out less than mornings.
Two operators make the crossing of about 20 minutes at the same price: €17 return, €11 for ages 4 to 11, free under 4. Naviera Nortour has its ticket office at the harbour entrance, opposite the La Lonja bar, and for €2 it sorts out the permit when you book. Ferry Isla de Lobos lets you choose your return time when you board. Choose your boat once you have the permit, with the outward and return trips inside your slot. Timetables and the route round the islet in Lobos Island.

The ferry costs €17 at the quay, on GetYourGuide and on Tiqets: buying online only saves you the queue. There's also a ferry with snorkelling from €27 and a catamaran with drinks and snorkelling from €75; on the catamarans, check the listing to see whether they land on Lobos or just anchor offshore.
Ferry to Lanzarote
Three companies cross to Playa Blanca: Fred. Olsen (25 minutes with cars or 35 on the passenger-only boat, up to 12 sailings a day), Baleària Canarias (about 35 minutes, €31) and Líneas Romero (30 minutes, €20.50, the cheapest for foot passengers). The €5–8 fares you see advertised are for Canary Islands residents. Romero also sells Timanfaya trips from Corralejo. More in Timanfaya and island hopping.
Corralejo fishing trips and prices
- Pesca Fishing Corralejo (https://fishingcorralejo.com/): 5-hour shared bottom fishing for €95 per person; private bottom or night fishing, €500 (5 h); private trolling €550 (5 h) or €800 (8 h). Gear and licence included, free cancellation up to 3 days before. They advertise tuna all year round and list marlin among their catches.
- Corralejo Charter (the catamaran Fenix Ñian): shared and private fishing trips with food and drink on board; no prices on its website (+34 680 856 122).
On the booking portals, shared half-day fishing trips run from €75 to €97 and private ones from €500 to €900. From Caleta de Fuste there's a 4-hour trip for €79.
Acua Water Park: season, closing days and tickets
Fuerteventura's only water park (25,000 m², more than 14 rides, free parking) is seasonal, and that's behind the most common wasted trip in the north. The yearly pattern:
- It opens the week before Easter (late March or early April) and closes in early November.
- Easter, June–August and the last few weeks before closing: open daily (10:30–17:30; in summer, 10:00–18:00).
- From mid-April to late May and from September to mid-October: closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The exact dates change every year: check the official calendar at https://www.acuawaterpark.com/gb/content/opening-hours.
A one-day ticket costs from €23 on the official website (https://www.acuawaterpark.com/gb/tickets) and a two-day ticket €33.50; under-4s go free. On GetYourGuide and Tiqets you'll see it from €30, so here the park's own website is cheaper. Online tickets must be bought by the day before at the latest and aren't refundable (you get a credit instead); on the day, it's ticket office only. The big slides require 120 cm. Full review in Acua Water Park.
More things to do: Popcorn Beach, Calderón Hondo, buggies and the market
- Popcorn Beach. West of town, along the north-coast track. The little white balls are rhodoliths, a calcareous algae: taking them is banned, and signs say so.
- Calderón Hondo. Next to Lajares (L8 via La Oliva): a 5 km circular trail of 1 h 30 up to a viewpoint at 278 m above the crater.
- El Cotillo. Lagoons, the Torre del Tostón and sunset; the direct L8 costs €2.05 and runs roughly hourly from 07:30 to 22:00.
- Buggies. A 3-hour buggy safari on dirt tracks, from €60.
- Market. The craft market at the El Campanario shopping centre (Calle Hibisco 1), Thursdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 14:00; double-check, as the published information is old.
- Horse riding. There are no stables in Corralejo; the nearest are in Lajares and El Roque.
- Oasis Wildlife. The Oasis Bus Norte (€7.50) picks up in Corralejo between 08:35 and 09:15 and takes 90 minutes; it heads back at 16:30. More in Oasis Wildlife.
Corralejo without a car: buses and getting there
The L6 links Corralejo with Puerto del Rosario for €3.40, every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday and hourly on Sundays. It leaves the harbour 10 minutes before the time shown for the bus station; the last one through the harbour is the 20:50, and after that you have to catch it at the station. Some Monday-to-Friday services stop at the airport (€3.90); otherwise, change to the L3 in Puerto del Rosario. Timetables at https://tiadhe.com/linea-06/.

Acua Water Park (late March to early November), Playa de la Concha on Lobos (shallow water), the dunes and the Calderón Hondo trail (1 h 30).
What can you do in Corralejo without a car?
Lobos by boat, the dunes, surfing with pick-up, the ferry to Lanzarote and the L8 bus to El Cotillo add up to several days without driving.
Can you drive through the Corralejo dunes?
As of today, yes, on the FV-104 at 50 km/h, but it's due to close to through traffic once the FV-1 dual carriageway reaches the INPESCASA roundabout: check before you go. Off the tarmac, you walk.
How much does it cost to get to Lobos Island from Corralejo?
The boat costs €17 return per adult (€11 for ages 4 to 11) and the Cabildo permit is free; book it at lobospass.com up to 5 days ahead.
