Things to do in Caleta de Fuste fall into two plans: easy beach days and boat trips from the marina, and excursions north (Lobos, the dunes) or south (Oasis Wildlife, Cofete). Caleta, also known as El Castillo or Costa Caleta, is the largest town in the municipality of Antigua and a resort built for arriving and unwinding: a beach protected from the swell, a marina, golf and the airport 7 km away.

The good

  • A beach without waves, good for children and unhurried swimmers
  • A cheap, short transfer from the airport
  • Boats and activities within walking distance of your hotel
  • A direct bus to Oasis Wildlife in about 45 minutes

The not so good

  • Little village atmosphere: it's a resort
  • No dunes or surf on the doorstep
  • For Cofete or Corralejo you need a car or a tour

What to see in Caleta de Fuste: beach, castle and salt pans

The beach. The bay is sheltered from the waves and from strong currents: the go-to family beach in the centre of the island.

The castle. The round defensive tower that gives the town its name was built in 1743, the work of the military engineer Claudio de L'Isle.

Salinas del Carmen. In Las Salinas, the next village to the south: 18th-century salt pans that still produce salt, with the Museo de la Sal (Salt Museum) and a whale skeleton at the entrance. Open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 (Barrio Las Salinas 2, tel. +34 928 174 926); the L3 bus terminates there.

The market. Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 10:00 to 14:00 only, with about a hundred stalls; it's run by Antigua town council.

Boat trips from Caleta de Fuste: Puerto Castillo

The marina, with 110 berths, sells its activities under the name Puerto Castillo. The old "Oceanarium Explorer" is the same thing: the brand was retired and its website now redirects to https://www.puertocastillo.com/en/. And there's no submarine: what's on sale is a boat with a glass hull.

Activity Official price When and conditions
Glass-bottom boat (30 min) €17 adult, €8 child hourly, 10:00–15:00
Obycat catamaran with paella and drinks €64 adult, €39 child 11:00–15:00
Dolphin and whale watching €49 adult, €29 child, €12 baby 14:00–16:00
Swim with sea lions €49 10:45, 12:45 and 14:45
Jet-ski circuit (20 min) €68 for 1 or 2 people 18 and over
Fishing (4 h: trolling and bottom fishing) €79 per angler, €60 per companion —
Floating water park (60 min) €13 from age 6 and 110 cm; 10:00–17:00
Buggy excursion (2 h 30) from €109 09:00, 12:00, 15:00; driving licence required

On the booking platforms the prices match the official ones (catamaran €64 and jet ski €68 on GetYourGuide, floating park €13 on Tiqets): choose your channel by the cancellation terms, not the price.

The sea-lion swim has three sessions a day: book the time, not just the day. Interactions with captive animals have their supporters, who value getting close to the species, and their critics, who question the animals' welfare; Puerto Castillo doesn't cite any external certification. For dolphin and whale watching, Caleta has only one licensed boat, and dolphins are what you'll usually see here: nobody can promise you whales.

Trike and buggy tours in Caleta de Fuste: what you actually pay

The trike tour you see quoted at "€85" is run by Cool Runnings (Fuertetrikes), with a shop at Avenida Alcalde Juan Ramón Soto Morales 13. Three things to know before you book:

  • €85 is per trike, not per person. Each trike carries two, so it works out at €42.50 a head. That's the short 2-hour tour (Caleta–Antigua–Betancuria and back), meeting at 14:30 and riding from 15:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday only.
  • For now, a driver does the driving. Their insurer changed its terms and the self-drive tours are suspended; the chauffeured tours carry on, fully insured. You don't need a licence.
  • It's no longer on GetYourGuide. Book directly at https://fuertetrikes.com/our-tours.html or on WhatsApp at +34 649 938 581.

The longer tours, also priced per trike and with a driver, leave at 10:00 (meet at 09:30): 4 hours for €145, 6 hours for €185 and 8 hours for €235. The 8-hour tour covers half the island: Ajuy, the Entallada lighthouse, lunch in Pájara, Betancuria and Los Molinos. Full review in trike tours.

By buggy: the harbour one (2 h 30, from €109, licence required) or a 3-hour guided tour from €69.50.

More things to do in Caleta de Fuste: golf, diving and horse riding

Golf. Fuerteventura Golf Club has 18 holes designed by Juan Catarineu (6,069 m from the men's tees) and hosted the Spanish Open in 2004. Golf Club Salinas de Antigua is on the Jandía road at km 12 (tel. +34 928 877 272); its website warns that buggies are not available for now. Neither club publishes green fees: ask when you book.

On the water. There's a 2-hour try dive from €100, an hour of stand-up paddleboarding from €15 or a 90-minute SUP lesson for €35.

Horse riding. The nearest stables are Crines del Viento, in Triquivijate. The booking portals advertise rides from about €30 an hour and €60 for two hours: confirm price and conditions with the stables.

Day trips from Caleta de Fuste: Lobos, Cofete and Oasis Wildlife

Lobos Island

Lobos lies off Corralejo: go independently by bus, or on an excursion with a coach from Caleta. Either way you need the free permit from the Cabildo, the island council (https://lobospass.com/, released 5 days ahead, 4-hour slots), and the boat costs €17 return with Naviera Nortour or Ferry Isla de Lobos. Full guide in Lobos Island.

The coach and ferry trip from Caleta takes about 6 h 30. If you'd like more time at sea, there's a catamaran to Lobos from €85; check the listing to see whether it lands on the island or just anchors offshore.

Cofete and Jandía

Cofete is at the southern tip of Jandía. Independently it's a long day: drive to Morro Jable, then take the dirt track or bus L111 (10:00 and 14:15, €8.70, no booking). The Cofete and Villa Winter tour, from €57, spares you the track; check the listing to see whether it picks up in Caleta. More in Jandía and Cofete.

Oasis Wildlife

The zoo at La Lajita is the family day out from here. The Oasis Bus Norte (€7.50) picks up at Caleta hotels between 09:00 and 09:30, takes about 45 minutes and heads back at 16:30. Entry costs €41.50 per adult and €27.50 for ages 4 to 11; online, by the day before at the latest and non-refundable. More in Oasis Wildlife.

Island tour

To see the centre of the island without driving: the 8-hour discovery tour, from €63 (check where it picks up), or the 8-hour trike tour. With a car, the inland route is in our Fuerteventura guide.

Getting there and around: airport, bus L3 and car

The airport is 7 km away, about 15 minutes by car. Without a car, the cheapest airport transfer on the island is the L3 bus (Puerto del Rosario – airport – Caleta de Fuste – Las Salinas): roughly every half hour Monday to Saturday, with the last services from the airport around 23:00. Caleta to Puerto del Rosario costs €1.45, in cash. Timetables at https://tiadhe.com/linea-03/.

For Corralejo, take the L3 to Puerto del Rosario bus station and change to the L6 there; for the south, the L1 or L10 from the capital.
