If you are looking for things to do in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, the short answer is: the beach in the morning and a boat for the rest of the day. Puerto Rico, in the municipality of Mogán, is home to almost the island's entire whale- and dolphin-watching fleet and the starting point of the coastal ferry, and it is €1.55 by bus from Puerto de Mogán, with its Friday market and the submarine.
For a week in the sun with children it is one of the easiest bases in the south: a calm-water beach and boats on the doorstep. Museums and historic quarters, on the other hand, you will find in Las Palmas or on trips into the interior.

Places to visit in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria: the beaches
- Playa de Puerto Rico (284 m): sand and calm water; the resort's own beach and the easiest one with small children.
- Playa de Amadores (488 m), in the next bay: almost twice as long, and the alternative when Puerto Rico is full.
- Anfi del Mar (180 m), towards Arguineguín: a diving spot and the base for jet skis, parasailing and flyboarding (watersports in Gran Canaria).
- Playa de Mogán (209 m), in Puerto de Mogán: golden sand and fully accessible.
It hardly ever rains: Gran Canaria's south coast gets less than 100 mm a year. The sea is around 23 °C in September and October and drops to about 19 °C in March (Canary Islands weather).
Boat trips from Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria: the two harbours
Puerto Rico has two harbours. Puerto Base is the one on the left as you face the sea: the Spirit of the Sea docks there, 70 m from the barrier; the nearest bus stop is ‘Agua de la Perra’ and parking at the harbour costs about €3 for two hours. The other is Puerto Escala: check your booking to see which quay your boat leaves from.
The harbour is also home to the Canary Watersports kiosk (jet skis, parasailing, inflatable sofa rides): it takes cash only and you must wear a T-shirt under the life jacket.
Dolphins and whales: what to really expect
Of the licensed whale-watching boats in Gran Canaria, about 14 are based in Puerto Rico and 3 in Puerto de Mogán. But this is not home to the resident pilot whale colony found off south-west Tenerife: these trips are mainly about dolphins, and whales depend on whether any happen to pass. If pilot whales are your priority, compare with Tenerife and the other islands. The two best-known direct options:
- Spirit of the Sea (our review): a catamaran built for whale watching, with both hulls glazed so you can see underwater. It never carries more than 100 people, crew included. It sails at 10:30 and 13:30, lasts 2 h 30 min and offers free pick-up from hotels in the south if you book 24 hours ahead. Its website doesn't publish the price; resellers list it at €40 per adult and €25 per child (2–12).
- Líneas Salmón: about 2 hours, €35 adult and €25 child aged 6 to 12; from Puerto Rico at 10:30 and 13:30. It advertises ‘guaranteed sightings’ without explaining what happens if you are out of luck: ask before you pay.
Swimming with wild dolphins is illegal
Canary Islands rules class swimming within 500 m of wild cetaceans as harmful behaviour, and Spanish national law bans swimming in their 60 m exclusion zone. Trips ‘with a swim stop’ stop in a cove with no dolphins nearby; on Spirit of the Sea, the 13:30 trip may include that swim if the sea allows.
Licensed boats fly a yellow ‘Barco Azul’ (Blue Boat) flag showing the current authorisation period; if you don't see one, ask.

The coastal ferry: Puerto Rico, Mogán, Arguineguín and Anfi
The most scenic way to reach Puerto de Mogán is by sea. Líneas Salmón, a family firm founded in 1969, links the four harbours on this coast all year round (timetables at lineassalmon.es):
| Route | Departures | Adult (13+) single / return | Child 6–12 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puerto Rico → Puerto de Mogán | hourly, 09:00–17:00 | €8 / €14 | €5 / €8 |
| Puerto de Mogán → Puerto Rico | hourly, 09:45–17:45 | €8 / €14 | €5 / €8 |
| Puerto Rico → Arguineguín | hourly, 09:30–16:30 | €8 / €14 | €5 / €8 |
| Puerto Rico → Anfi del Mar | hourly, 10:30–16:30 | €5 / €8 | €3.50 / €5 |
| Puerto de Mogán → Arguineguín | hourly, 09:45–15:45 | €15 / €21 | €8 / €15 |
Under-6s travel free. Líneas Blue Bird covers the same four harbours as a ‘hop-on hop-off by sea’, with five boats and glass-bottom catamarans; its fares only appear during the booking process on its website.
Out by boat, back by bus
The ferry to Mogán costs €8; the bus, €1.55. Go by sea, which is the scenic route, and come back on lines 1, 33, 70 or 91. And keep an eye on the clock: the last boat from Mogán to Puerto Rico leaves at 17:45 and the last one to Arguineguín at 15:45.
Puerto de Mogán: things to do in a day
The plan that works from Puerto Rico: arrive by boat in the morning, stroll round the harbour, swim at Mogán beach, have lunch there and go down in the submarine in the afternoon. If it's a Friday, add the market and subtract the peace and quiet.
Submarine Adventure, the ‘Yellow Submarine’
What everyone calls the Yellow Submarine is Submarine Adventure: Atlántida Submarine's Golden Shark, which has operated here since 1996. This 44-seat tourist submarine descends to 20–25 m, down to the Parque Submarino La Atlántida artificial reef, in 40–45 minutes with an audio guide in 12 languages.
- Ticket-office price: €38 adult and €22 child aged 2 to 12. On its website there is a 10% discount, but those tickets are not valid for the same day. On the platforms it costs from €38, the same as the ticket office: if you are sure a day ahead, the operator's own website is cheaper.
- Dives: eight a day between 10:00 and 17:10 (the last one doesn't run from November to February), every day except 25 December and 1 January.
- Who can't go: under-2s and anyone who can't climb down the vertical hatch ladder unaided (not suitable for wheelchairs). Pregnant women can go. There is no toilet on board.
- Cancellation: refund up to 24 hours before; after that, nothing.
There is a free bus, with booking, from several areas in the south, and two hours' free parking on the Dique Sur, if there is space. Full analysis in Yellow Submarine (Submarine Adventure).
Mogán markets and others nearby
The Puerto de Mogán municipal market sets up every Friday from 09:00 to 15:30 (Avenida Los Marreros, Plaza Pedro Betancort and the Castillete esplanade). It is the busiest day in the village and cars can't get down to the quay. Quieter alternatives (calendar at turismo.mogan.es):
- Playa de Mogán, crafts market: Mondays, 08:30–14:30.
- Arguineguín, municipal market: Tuesdays, 08:30–15:00.
- Puerto Rico, farmers' and crafts market: every other Sunday, 08:30–14:30.
Things to do in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria with kids (and the truth about the water park)
There is no water park in Puerto Rico. What there is:
- Angry Birds Activity Park, on Avenida de la Cornisa: 5,000 m² of zip lines, trampolines, a climbing wall and mini golf for ages 3 to 13, with a splash zone and foam parties. It is not a water park. It opens Thursday to Monday from 10:00 to 18:00 (closed Tuesday and Wednesday), and ages 5 to 13 pay more than adults: €17 against €13. Details in our review.
- Los Lagos de Taurito Park, in Taurito, on the way to Mogán: small, with seawater; adults pay between €10 and €19 depending on the season. It has had the odd slide closed and mixed reviews.
- Aqualand Maspalomas, the island's big waterslide park: line 70 connects it with Puerto Rico with no change. Prices and tips in Aqualand Maspalomas.

Mogán tourist tax
Mogán charges a tourist tax of €0.15 per person per night, currently the only municipal one in the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands High Court (Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Canarias) struck down the bylaw in July 2026. The town council has appealed to the Supreme Court and maintains that the tax still applies until there is a final ruling, so ask the hotel when you book whether you will be charged.
