The Canary Islands in April are settled and mild: afternoons of 23 °C in south Tenerife and 23.5 °C on Lanzarote, nights of 16 °C, around 5–7 mm of rain in the whole month in the south and east, and the sea between 18.9 and 20.1 °C. With summer time, the sun sets at around 20:30.

The underlying change is invisible but important: from April the temperature inversion that caps the clouds is in place on more than 90 % of days, so the weather settles and the days of looking down on the sea of clouds from Teide and the Roque de los Muchachos return. And the crowds thin: between 1.4 and 1.5 million arrivals, against 1.73 million in March.

Canary Islands weather in April: south, north, east and peaks

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In April Lanzarote becomes the warmest island by day (23.5 °C) and the sunniest (8.5 hours a day), with 5 mm in the whole month. Fuerteventura, 22.9 °C and a single day of rain.

South Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Tenerife South, a high of 23.1 °C and a low of 16 °C, 7 mm and 1 day of rain. Gran Canaria airport, 22.6 °C and 7.6 hours of sunshine.

North. Santa Cruz de Tenerife dries out (12 mm), but the Tenerife North plateau, at 632 m, still gets 39 mm over 6 days and doesn't go above 18.5 °C. La Palma airport, 21.6 °C with 18 mm over 3 days and only 5.8 hours of sunshine.

El Hierro and La Gomera. El Hierro, 21.6 °C by day and 17 °C at night. AEMET does not publish climate normals for La Gomera; its sea is at 19.8 °C.

Teide. Izaña climbs to 11.8 °C by day and 3.5 °C at night; snow is now rare (0.6 days) and the sunshine adds up to 9.8 hours a day. It is still cold up there at dusk: take a warm layer for any sunset or stargazing trip (Teide).

Sea temperature in April: can you swim?

Yes, although the sea lags behind the air: 18.9 °C around Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, 19.4 °C at Maspalomas, 19.6 °C at Los Cristianos and 20.1 °C off El Hierro. Half a degree more than in March; properly warm water doesn't arrive until late summer.

What to pack: summer clothes and a light layer for the evening, high-factor sun cream (the UV index is already "very high"), sunglasses and something warm for the peaks.

Things to do in the Canary Islands in April: festivals and events

  • Holy Week (Semana Santa), when Easter falls in April: processions in La Laguna, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas, and more visitors from mainland Spain.
  • Rally Islas Canarias, on Gran Canaria: in its first year as a round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) it was held in late April. Check the date before planning your trip around it.
  • Romería de Tegueste (Tenerife), a traditional pilgrimage festival in late April.
  • The Lyrids, April's meteor shower, around the 21st–22nd: if it coincides with a full moon, you will barely see them.

What's in season: whales, water parks, hiking and the small islands

Whales and dolphins. The spring window opens, with sperm whales and passing species as well as the resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins (whale and dolphin watching).

Water parks. Acua (Corralejo) and Aquapark Costa Teguise are now open, but in spring they close two days a week: Acua on Wednesdays and Thursdays, Costa Teguise on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Check their calendars (Acua, Costa Teguise) before promising the children.

Hiking. A good month on every island: long days, little rain and none of the summer heat. Routes island by island in hiking in the Canary Islands.

Small islands: La Graciosa, Lobos and La Gomera

With the winter swell season over, April is a good month to hop across to the neighbouring islands. La Graciosa is reached from Órzola with Líneas Romero or Biosfera Express, €29 return with either. Romero's ticket costs the same on its website as on the booking platforms:
