Island hopping in the Canaries

Island hopping in the Canaries: ferries, flights and cruises between the islands

Three pairs of islands work well by boat; for the rest, flying wins. And watch out: the €5–16 tickets you see advertised are resident fares. Between the main islands a visitor pays €20.50 to €112 per crossing.

The ferry between the Canary Islands really works on three pairs: Tenerife with La Gomera (50 minutes from Los Cristianos), Tenerife with Gran Canaria (80 minutes to Agaete, or 1 h 40 capital to capital) and Lanzarote with Fuerteventura (25–35 minutes). Add La Graciosa from Órzola and Lobos from Corralejo, which you can only reach by boat.

For almost everything else, fly: Gran Canaria–Lanzarote is six hours by sea against under 50 minutes in the air. La Palma and El Hierro sit in between: 2 h 20–2 h 30 by boat from Los Cristianos, reasonable if you have a car or are staying in the south of Tenerife; if not, fly from Tenerife North.

Ferry between the Canary Islands: what a visitor pays

Canary Islands residents get 75% off inter-island boats and flights; visitors, including those from mainland Spain, pay the full fare. On several routes Fred. Olsen prints only the resident figure, and Baleària advertises €11 to La Gomera on its island page while the route page says €42. Both use dynamic pricing: the "from" price is the cheapest day. With a car and 2 to 5 people, Fred. Olsen's package fares cut the price by up to 60%.

Ferry routes between the Canary Islands, ports and crossing times

Tenerife – La Gomera

It leaves from Los Cristianos in the south, not from Santa Cruz: 50 minutes with Fred. Olsen (up to 5 a day, from €39.74) or with Baleària Canarias (daily, from €42). In San Sebastián the town centre is ten minutes' walk away, and the Benchi Express carries on along the coast to Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey (€15 per leg, up to 3 a day). Everything about the island in La Gomera.

Tenerife – Gran Canaria

Fred. Olsen sails from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Agaete (Puerto de las Nieves) in 80 minutes, up to 8 a day, from €45.98, with a free bus to Las Palmas that you book 48 hours ahead. Baleària links the two capitals in 1 h 40, up to 6 a day, from €60 (€62 from Tenerife to Gran Canaria). City to city, the journey time is similar: choose by where you are staying.

Tenerife – La Palma and El Hierro

To Santa Cruz de La Palma, 2 h 30 from Los Cristianos: Fred. Olsen up to twice a day and Baleària daily, from €55. To El Hierro (Puerto de La Estaca, next to Valverde), 2 h 20, with one daily Fred. Olsen sailing; Baleària advertises it too, and neither publishes the visitor fare outside its booking engine. More in El Hierro and La Palma.

Gran Canaria – Fuerteventura and Lanzarote

Las Palmas–Morro Jable: Baleària in 1 h 45, 3 a day, from €70; Fred. Olsen in about 2 h. Morro Jable is at the southern tip, ideal for Jandía and a long way from Corralejo. Las Palmas–Puerto del Rosario (6 h 15) and Las Palmas–Arrecife (6 h, from €112) are conventional Baleària ferries with cabins.

There is no direct boat from Tenerife to Lanzarote or Fuerteventura: Baleària sells Santa Cruz–Morro Jable with a stop in Las Palmas (from about 4 h 15) and Santa Cruz–Arrecife with a change of ship (8 h 15–9 h 10). Better to fly from Tenerife North.

Lanzarote – Fuerteventura

Three ferry companies compete from Playa Blanca to Corralejo. Fred. Olsen runs up to 12 sailings: 25 minutes on the Bocayna Express (takes cars) or 35 on the Buganvilla Express (foot passengers only). Baleària takes about 35 minutes, up to 7 sailings, from €31. On foot, the lowest published fare is Líneas Romero's: 30 minutes, 5 sailings, €20.50 (€39 return).

La Graciosa and Lobos

Órzola–Caleta de Sebo costs the same with Líneas Romero and with Biosfera Express: €16 single, €29 return, about 25 minutes. Between them they run 17–19 sailings a day, but your return ties you to the boats of one company. The full guide is in La Graciosa.

You reach Lobos from Corralejo with Naviera Nortour or with the islalobos.es boat: about 20 minutes, €17 return. First you need the free permit from the Cabildo (island council) at https://lobospass.com/ (it opens five days ahead; two four-hour slots, with no more than 200 people on the island at once). Details in Isla de Lobos.

Day trips to another island

Fred. Olsen and Baleària show their timetables, first and last sailings included, only in their booking engines: check the exact day at https://www.fredolsen.es/en/ or https://www.baleariacanarias.com/en/routes-timetables/ before you firm up the plan.

From To Day trip? Why
Los Cristianos (Tenerife) La Gomera Yes, the classic 50 min, two ferry companies
Tenerife Gran Canaria, or the other way Yes, a long day 80 min to Agaete or 1 h 40 to Las Palmas; adding Teide is very tight
Tenerife La Palma Better by air 2 h 30 by boat each way
Tenerife El Hierro Not by boat One sailing each way on most days
Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) Corralejo Yes, easy About 24 sailings a day
Órzola (Lanzarote) La Graciosa Yes Last boat back between 17:00 and 19:00 depending on the season
Corralejo Lobos Half a day The permit covers one 4-hour slot
Gran Canaria Morro Jable Possible, but long 1 h 45–2 h each way

From the south of Tenerife, the day trip to La Gomera is the easiest.

Canary Islands island hopping itineraries: one week and ten days

One week, two islands. Lanzarote + Fuerteventura: fly into one and out of the other, as both have international flights. Tenerife + La Gomera: fly in and out of Tenerife South, because La Gomera only has inter-island flights. Tenerife + Gran Canaria: cross over and fly home from Gran Canaria.

Ten days, three islands. Lanzarote → Fuerteventura → Gran Canaria: Playa Blanca–Corralejo, Fuerteventura from north to south and the boat from Morro Jable to Las Palmas, without a single inter-island flight; with a few more days, carry on to Tenerife. Gran Canaria → Tenerife → La Gomera works the same way. For Tenerife → La Gomera → La Palma, Baleària's La Gomera–La Palma boat (about 4 h, Monday to Saturday) saves you going back to sleep in Tenerife.

El Hierro only fits as a there-and-back from Tenerife, and mixing Lanzarote or Fuerteventura with the western islands means flying with a connection. If in doubt, see which island to choose.

Hire cars on the ferry, luggage and pets

Cars travel on every Fred. Olsen and Baleària route except the La Gomera coastal boat and the Buganvilla Express; visitors' cars cannot go to La Graciosa or Lobos. With a hire car, get written permission from the rental company first: Baleària only loads it if the contract allows.

Baleària closes boarding at the same times as Fred. Olsen on the La Gomera and La Palma routes, but 40 minutes before for everyone from Las Palmas; arrive late and you miss the boat. Fred. Olsen allows 20 kg per person that you carry yourself. Pets travel with a booked place on Fred. Olsen (from €2) and free on Líneas Romero. If you get seasick, stick to the short crossings (La Gomera, Lanzarote–Fuerteventura).

Flights between the Canary Islands: Binter, Canaryfly and airports

There are eight airports. Binter flies to all of them; Canaryfly to six, not La Gomera or Tenerife South. Binter flights take under 50 minutes, check-in closes 30 minutes before and a 20 kg bag is included; Canaryfly's cheapest fare does not include one.

Almost everything leaves from Tenerife North and Gran Canaria; from Tenerife South only the flight to Gran Canaria is confirmed, and La Gomera and El Hierro only have flights from those two airports. La Gomera's airport is next to Playa Santiago, 34 km from San Sebastián; the ferry drops you in the capital. The "€9–20" Binter advertises are resident fares; your price only appears in its booking engine.

Cruises around the Canary Islands

A cruise around the Canary Islands is a winter product, with the peak season from October to April. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the main home port: the Port Authority lists MSC, Marella, AIDA, TUI Cruises, P&O Cruises and Costa as cruise lines based there, plus Windstar and CroisiEurope; Royal Caribbean is not on the list. From Las Palmas sail MSC, Costa and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, which has nothing to do with the ferries.

The usual itinerary is a 7-night loop around Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and often La Palma, or combined with Madeira and Morocco (Agadir, Casablanca). As a guide, TUI Cruises sells 7 nights Canaries and Madeira from Las Palmas from €1,379 per person in an inside cabin, flight included. A port call is usually a single day: pick one thing.
