What's the weather like in the Canary Islands in November: south, north, east and summits
Is it warm enough for the beach in November?
In the south and on the eastern islands, yes. An average afternoon at Tenerife South reaches 24.8 °C, almost the same as in June (25.4 °C), and Lanzarote and Fuerteventura get 24 °C with nearly 7 hours of sun. What changes is the length of the day: it gets dark around 18:10 and the low drops to 17–18 °C, so dinner on a terrace calls for long sleeves.
Away from the south coast the picture is different: Tenerife North, on the La Laguna plateau, stops at a high of 19.6 °C and a low of 13.3 °C, and Izaña, at 2,369 m, at 11.1 °C by day and 4.5 °C at night, with the first snow possible on Teide.
Where it rains and where it doesn't
November opens the rainy stretch of the year, which lasts until January: the temperature inversion that shields the islands in summer shows up in fewer than 85% of weather-balloon soundings, and Atlantic lows find a way in.
- Driest: Fuerteventura (13 mm over 2.2 days) and Lanzarote (15 mm over 3), with 6.8–6.9 hours of sun.
- The south of the high islands: Tenerife South, 26 mm on just 1.9 days; Gran Canaria, 22 mm over nearly 4.
- Wettest: the north of Tenerife (81 mm over 8 days), La Palma (70 mm over 7, with 4.7 hours of sun) and El Hierro (37 mm).
The paradox: in November and December the frequency of cloud cover in Las Palmas falls to its lowest (54%, against 97% in June and July). Less of the panza de burro, the grey ‘donkey's belly’ blanket of trade-wind cloud, and more proper showers. Tropical storms are rare but not impossible: Delta, at the end of November 2005, brought gusts of 140 km/h on the coast and power cuts lasting up to a week on Tenerife.
Sea temperature in November: can you swim?
Yes. The water is 21.6 °C off Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, 22.2 °C off Gran Canaria, 22.6 °C off Tenerife, 22.7 °C off La Palma and La Gomera and 22.9 °C off El Hierro: off Tenerife, that's warmer than in July (22.2 °C). For the calmest sea, head for the leeward beaches of southern Tenerife and Gran Canaria; the north and west are already getting the swell that surfers come for.
Bring summer clothes for the day, a jumper for the evening and a waterproof if you're going to La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro or the north of Tenerife.
Where to go in the Canary Islands in November
For sun and little rain, Fuerteventura or Lanzarote; for the warmest afternoons, the south of Tenerife; for warm water and nights, El Hierro, with more cloud. In Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna or Santa Cruz de La Palma, expect some rainy days. More in which island to choose.
