There are plenty of surf schools in Corralejo, but few publish their price, group size and what the lesson includes. We review the ones that do: Aloha Surf Academy, Corralejo Surf School, Surf Passion School and Flag Beach, plus René Egli at Sotavento for anyone after wind. A lesson costs €50–70 booked directly with the school and from €44 on GetYourGuide. Some schools from older guides, such as Homegrown Surf School, no longer have a working website.
In Fuerteventura winter is for waves and summer for wind: for learning, the kindest season is summer; if you already surf, come between October and April. Spots and seasons are in surfing in Fuerteventura.
How to choose a surf school in Corralejo
Students per instructor. This is the figure that matters most for what you learn. With almost identical prices, the maximum ranges from 4 to 6 or 8 students per instructor: twice the attention for the same money. Ask for the real maximum, not the usual number.
Qualifications and insurance. Schools cite the Canary Islands Surf Federation (FCS), the Spanish federation (FES) or the ISA; for kite and windsurf, VDWS and IKO. Ask what qualification your instructor holds and whether the lesson includes insurance, because not all schools say.
Real length. Online lessons last between 3 and 4 hours, and that figure may include the minibus transfer. Ask how long you actually spend in the water.
Where the lesson is. Schools pick the beach with the best conditions each morning, often a minibus ride away: if the family wants to stay nearby, ask where you are going.
The schools, one by one
Aloha Surf Academy
In Corralejo since 2011. Single lesson €70, three lessons €210, five €320. Maximum 6 students per instructor. Includes pick-up, a warm-up and surf-skate, and the head instructor teaches in six languages. It is the most expensive of those that publish prices: you are paying for the method. Website: alohasurfacademy.com.
Corralejo Surf School
One day €50, three days €135. Includes minibus transfer, a safety and theory briefing, and the return to your hotel. It doesn't publish its maximum group size: ask. With the three-day package it is the cheapest per day. Website: corralejosurfschool.com.
Surf Passion School
Group lesson €50; private €80 for one person or €120 for two; a €30 "surfari". Maximum 4 students per instructor, the smallest group of those compared, and an FCS-qualified instructor since 2015: for the same price, the option with the most attention. Website: surfpassionschool.com.
Flag Beach Watersports Centre
The most complete centre: surf, kite, windsurf, wing and stand-up paddleboarding. It is a VDWS centre with IKO instructors, works at more than ten beaches, and its packages include transfers, equipment and insurance. For kite, 4 students per instructor on the sand and 2 in the water. It doesn't show prices outside its booking system. Website: flagbeach.com.
René Egli (Sotavento, not Corralejo)
For wind, the benchmark is at Playa de Sotavento, Costa Calma, since 1984: windsurf, kite and wing. It is in the south, at the other end of the island: it makes sense if you are staying there. Website: rene-egli.com.
Surf lesson prices: direct versus online
Beyond these four you will see offers from €30 to €50 a day, and five-day courses start at around €190–215. On GetYourGuide the cheapest lesson in Corralejo is from €44 (4 hours, 4.6 from 208 reviews) and most listings from €50. The difference from booking direct is small: the platform gives you cancellation and visible reviews; the school, the group size in writing.
Best beaches for beginners
There is no fixed "beginners' beach": the school chooses each day according to the sea. There are also schools in El Cotillo, with a beach break south of the village. What isn't for you if you are starting out: the northern reefs, such as El Hierro at Majanicho, and the right-hander at Lobos, waves over rock for experienced surfers.
