To get to La Graciosa you take the ferry at Órzola, at the northern tip of Lanzarote, and half an hour later you're in Caleta de Sebo. It's the easiest day trip from Lanzarote and the one that changes the scenery most: sandy streets and not a metre of tarmac.
Go early, hire an e-bike if you don't cycle often and make a note of the last boat: the part of this day that goes wrong is the journey back.
What La Graciosa is and why it's called the eighth island
La Graciosa covers 29 km² and has just over 700 inhabitants in two settlements: Caleta de Sebo, where the ferry docks, and Casas de Pedro Barba, a score or so of holiday homes with no shops. The highest point, Agujas Grandes, reaches 266 m. The El Río strait separates it from Lanzarote.
In 2018 the Spanish Senate declared it the eighth inhabited Canary Island. The declaration didn't change its administrative status: it has no island council of its own and is still part of the municipality of Teguise.
Two kinds of protection are often confused:
- Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park (Parque Natural del Archipiélago Chinijo): protected since 1986, 46,263 ha of sea and land. It includes the islets to the north and the Famara cliffs.
- Marine Reserve of La Graciosa and the islets north of Lanzarote: a state marine reserve created in 1995, covering 70,439 ha according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food factsheet. Its fully protected zone, where you can neither enter nor fish, is a one-nautical-mile circle around Roque del Este. It's one of the three state marine reserves in the Canary Islands.
La Graciosa ferry: price, companies and timetable
Two companies cross from Órzola to Caleta de Sebo at the same price: €16 single and €29 return for a non-resident adult; children €8 single and €16 (Romero) or €15 (Biosfera) return. Canary Islands residents pay €4 and €7.25. The crossing takes 25 to 30 minutes.
| Ferry company | First boat from Órzola | Last boat back |
|---|---|---|
| Líneas Romero | 08:30 | 17:00 in winter; 18:00 from late March to June; 19:00 from July to late October |
| Biosfera Express | 08:00 | 18:30 (doesn't say whether it's seasonal) |
Between the two, there's a boat from Órzola every 30–60 minutes from 08:00 to 13:30 and then nothing until 16:00; coming back, the gap runs from 12:30 to 15:00. Check the day's timetable on Líneas Romero or Biosfera Express before you set off.
One ticket, one company
A return ticket is only valid on the boats of the company that sold it: if you miss Romero's last boat, Biosfera's won't take you.
- Romero: open ticket (if you miss a boat, you take the next one); boarding up to 10 minutes before departure; cancelling with less than 24 hours' notice costs the full fare. Bikes, boards and pets travel free.
- Biosfera: free date and time changes and cancellation up to 24 hours before.
- Both ask for an ID card or passport. If rough seas cancel the crossing, they refund the ticket and nothing more.

How to get to Órzola from Lanzarote
By car. It's the only option that leaves your timing entirely up to you. The car stays in Órzola: visitors' vehicles aren't allowed on La Graciosa. Romero's car park is for return-ticket holders only.
By bus. Intercity Bus Lanzarote's line 9 runs from Arrecife to Órzola in about 54 minutes, via Tahíche, Guatiza, Mala, Arrieta and Punta Mujeres, with five departures a day; the same line serves Jardín de Cactus and Jameos del Agua on the César Manrique route. For a full day, go on the 07:20 or the 10:15 and come back on the 16:40 or the 18:10, the last one. It doesn't go via Costa Teguise. Timetables at arrecifebus.com.
From the airport. Líneas Romero runs a shared transfer from T2 at 12:10 and 16:40 (for the 13:30 and 18:00 boats); it returns with the 12:30 and 17:00 boats. Return tickets only, booked before 18:00 the day before.
Coach plus ferry. Romero sells "La Graciosa a tu aire" (La Graciosa at your own pace), coach and ferry on the 11:00 boat, for €40 (children €29). On GetYourGuide there's a ferry with bus pick-up from €40.

Getting around La Graciosa: bike, 4x4 taxi or on foot
Bike. In Caleta de Sebo a mountain bike costs €10 a day and an e-bike €25. The tracks are soft sand and the wind never lets up: for the northern loop of about 20 km, the hire shop itself recommends an e-bike to anyone who doesn't cycle often. The beaches usually take about 45 minutes.
4x4 taxi. They wait on the quay at Caleta de Sebo and all charge the same: the tour of the north of the island costs €60 for two people plus €30 for each extra person; transfers to a beach from €10 per person if there are two of you. There are few licences: at Easter and in summer, book ahead.
On foot. Pedro Barba and Montaña Amarilla are each about 6 km from Caleta de Sebo. In route apps (AllTrails, Wikiloc), Caleta de Sebo–Playa de las Conchas is listed at around 1 hour each way, and the southern loop via El Salado, La Francesa, La Cocina and Montaña Amarilla at 14 km and 3.5–4 hours. Take water: there are no shops outside Caleta de Sebo. More routes in hiking in the Canary Islands.
What to see on La Graciosa in a day
- Playa Francesa: in the south; it's the furthest point bikes and taxis reach.
- Playa de La Cocina: on foot only, 10–15 minutes beyond La Francesa.
- Montaña Amarilla: in the south of the island, about 6 km from the port.
- Playa de las Conchas: the postcard view of the north-west. It's a beach to look at: there are waves and currents and it isn't safe for swimming.
La Graciosa in a day
Catch a boat between 08:00 and 09:00 (the 10:30 is the busiest, according to Biosfera). E-bike, the north in the morning to see Las Conchas, lunch in the village and an afternoon swim at La Francesa. Be back at the quay half an hour before your company's last boat.
To see the village without the day-trippers you have to stay the night: book early for Carnival, Easter, summer and the Fiestas del Carmen (around 16 July). The evening before and on the morning itself, check the Caleta de Sebo webcam that Biosfera publishes.
If you'd rather be at sea than on a bike, several companies run catamaran days with lunch; Líneas Romero has its own, "I Love La Graciosa", from Órzola at 11:00, lasting about 6 hours.
