Timanfaya is worth the ticket: it's the landscape of the largest historical eruption in the Canary Islands, in 1730–1736, which opened more than 30 vents along a 14 km fissure and buried around a quarter of Lanzarote. But you see it sitting down: the €30 ticket puts you on the Ruta de los Volcanes coach and shows you the heat beneath the ground at Islote de Hilario. To walk inside the park you need the park's free guided walks, booked a month ahead, or the CACT's paid small-group visit.

If you have a car, go under your own steam and book one of the first slots. If not, a half-day tour solves the transport problem, because no bus goes there.

Our pick

1

Half day, no driving

The Ruta de los Volcanes and the geothermal demonstrations in 5 hours; leaves the afternoon free.

2

Timanfaya and the northern caves

A full day that adds Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes, the two lava tubes in the north.

3

Walking among the volcanoes

A 3-hour guided hike through the eruption landscapes, with optional transfers; the alternative if you can't get a place on the free walks.

4

If you arrive by cruise ship

Timanfaya, a vineyard and Charco Verde from Arrecife, in a format designed for cruise passengers.

Timanfaya National Park tickets: price, opening hours and where to buy

Tickets are sold only on the website of the island council's Art, Culture and Tourism Centres (CACT): ventaonline.cactlanzarote.com. Prices include IGIC, the Canary Islands sales tax.

Rate Price
Adult €30
Child aged 7 to 12 €15
Child aged 0 to 6 free
Canary Islands resident (adult / child) €24 / €12
Lanzarote resident €2
Person with a disability (adult / child) €21 / €10.50

Reduced rates require the original document at the ticket office; without it, the ticket is cancelled with no refund. A couple pays €60, or €82 with the camel ride.

Montañas del Fuego is open 365 days a year from 09:30 to 15:45, with the same hours in summer and winter; according to the park, 15:45 is last entry.

  1. Go to the CACT online shop and choose Montañas del Fuego.
  2. Pick a day and time slot. The park itself recommends arriving between 09:00 and 10:30 or after 13:30; Sunday is the quietest day.
  3. Pay and screenshot the QR code: mobile signal on the park road is poor.
  4. Drive along the LZ-67 to the Taro de Entrada (km 13.8). From there you can only carry on by car to the Islote de Hilario car park, without stopping or getting out.
  5. Be at the ticket office 15 minutes before your slot with your ticket and, for a reduced rate, the document.

What a visit to Timanfaya National Park is like

The national park was declared in 1974 and covers 51 km² between Tinajo and Yaiza. Its visitor hub, Montañas del Fuego, sits on Islote de Hilario, from where you can see more than 25 craters.

The ticket includes:

  • Parking at the Islote.
  • The geothermal demonstrations. Staff pour water into a pipe and it shoots back out like a geyser, and they set brushwood alight with the heat of the ground, which at 13 m down ranges from 100 to 600 °C.
  • The viewpoint at Islote de Hilario.
  • The Ruta de los Volcanes by coach, designed by César Manrique: 12–14 km and about 35–40 minutes without leaving the coach, departing every 20 minutes, with commentary in Spanish, English and German and accessible vehicles.

Allow 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 in total. El Diablo restaurant, also by Manrique, cooks over a 5 m well where the natural heat is around 250 °C. It doesn't take bookings, so don't count on eating at a set time.

Private cars can only use the access road as far as the Islote car park, and you can't walk freely in the core of the park. No pets or drones, and no taking stones or plants.

Free guided walks and the visitor centre

What hardly any tour tells you: the national park runs free guided walks that take you on foot into the protected core.

  • Tremesana route. In Spanish or English, about 3 hours including transfers, easy, ages 16 and over. It runs five days a week from Plaza de los Remedios in Yaiza (be there 15 minutes early), in very small groups.
  • Ruta del Litoral (coastal route). Guided from El Golfo, also in Spanish and English.

Book them on the park's booking page at least 25–30 days ahead. If the system fails or you can't see any dates, call 928 118 042 or email usopublico.timanfaya@gobiernodecanarias.org.

Without a permit, you can do the long coastal route on your own, from Playa de la Madera (Tinajo) to El Golfo: 9.75 km, rated difficult, with long stretches without mobile signal and rescue only on foot.

The Mancha Blanca Visitor Centre (LZ-67, km 9.6) is free and open daily 09:00–16:00, with a 30-minute audiovisual show and an eruption simulation. It's about 4 km from the Taro de Entrada: a good stop while you wait for your slot.

Timanfaya camel ride: price and times

The dromedary rides aren't included in the ticket and aren't run by the CACT: Yaiza town council organises them at the Echadero de los Camellos (LZ-67, km 16), about 2 km from the Taro de Entrada.

  • Price: €11 per person per ride, by card or in cash; €9.50 if you buy it through an agency or a tour.
  • Children: pay from age 4; up to 3, free with an adult.
  • Duration: 20–25 minutes on the southern slope of Montaña de Timanfaya.
  • Times: roughly 09:00 to 15:00 (official sources differ by half an hour). Closed on 25 December and 1 January.
  • Booking: not needed for small groups. Information: 928 836 220.

If animal rides aren't your thing, skip it: the volcano visit loses nothing.

How to get to Timanfaya: by car or on a tour

You get to Timanfaya by car, by taxi or on a tour. No bus route goes to the Taro de Entrada or the Islote. For a taxi, use the Tinajo service: 928 84 00 49.

With a car, the day plans itself: Mancha Blanca, Montañas del Fuego, the camels and, on the way back, El Golfo or La Geria. Close by are Volcán del Cuervo, with an easy trail right into the crater, and Caldera Blanca, about 10 km and 3 hours from the church at Mancha Blanca.

Timanfaya tours on GetYourGuide and Tiqets

The CACT says Montañas del Fuego tickets are sold online only on its own website. The product list on this page has no standalone ticket: everything is a tour, from half days at €59 and cruise-passenger versions from Arrecife at €49 to full days that add Jameos and Cueva de los Verdes.

There are also paid hikes (from €44) through the eruption landscapes. You can't walk freely in the park's core, so check the listing for where each route goes before you book. They're the option if you didn't get a place on Tremesana.

Before you pay, do the maths: if the tour costs little more than the ticket, look carefully at what it includes.

Tips for your visit

  • Best time: the first slot or after 13:30, ideally on a Sunday.
  • Clothing: it's windy; bring a warm layer between October and April.
  • With kids: free up to age 6. Pushchairs are awkward; a baby carrier is better.
  • Other volcanoes: Teide and La Palma's Tajogaite are visited in very different ways; compare them in Canary Islands volcanoes.

Timanfaya fills half a day; the other half could be La Geria or the north on the César Manrique route. The rest of the island is in things to do in Lanzarote. If walking's your thing, there are more routes in hiking in the Canary Islands. Official park information: gobiernodecanarias.org/parquesnacionales/timanfaya.
