Canary Islands weather in June: south, north, east and peaks

In June the trade wind, the north-easterly of the Canary summer, picks up. It pushes a layer of low cloud against the northern slopes of the high islands, and a temperature inversion keeps it trapped below 700–1,500 m. In June and July cloud frequency in Las Palmas reaches 97 %: this is the "panza de burro" (donkey's belly), while the south and the peaks stay clear.

Tenerife North airport, at 632 m on the La Laguna plateau, stays at a high of 22.2 °C and a low of 14.0 °C, with 8 days of fog: it sits inside the cloud. La Palma airport records 24.1 °C with only 6.3 hours of sunshine a day, against 10.2 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 9.7 on Lanzarote.

Higher up, Izaña (2,369 m, next to Teide) records 12.7 hours of sunshine a day, the highest figure of any station in any month, with 18.9 °C by day and 9.9 °C at night. If you wake up to grey skies in Puerto de la Cruz, head up to Teide or down to the south: the cloud is a thin layer, 200 to 600 m deep, not a storm (AEMET normals).

Sea temperature in June: can you swim?

The sea lags behind the air: 20.9 °C around Lanzarote, 21.0 °C around Fuerteventura, 21.3 °C off Gran Canaria, 21.5 °C off Tenerife and 21.9 °C off El Hierro. Plenty warm enough for a swim; the warmest water comes in September and October, and even then it doesn't go much above 24 °C: the islands are washed by a cold current, not the Gulf Stream.

In your suitcase: summer clothes and high-factor sun cream, as AEMET warns that UV readings in the Canaries go even higher than the 9–11 of mainland Spain's summer. Add a windproof jacket for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and a warm layer if you go up Teide at night: at 2,369 m the average low is 10 °C.

Things to do in the Canary Islands in June: festivals and events

  • Corpus Christi in La Orotava (Tenerife). The carpets are laid on the Thursday after Corpus, a week later than in the rest of Spain, and the Romería de San Isidro pilgrimage follows on the Sunday; depending on the year, in late May or in June.
  • Night of San Juan, 23 June. Bonfires on the beaches of every island.
  • Bajada de la Rama in Mogán (Gran Canaria). During the San Antonio fiestas, in mid-June; the one in Agaete is in August.

La Palma's Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves is held only every five years and is not due for the next few years.

What's in season: whales, wind, water parks and stars

Whales and dolphins. Pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live between Tenerife and La Gomera all year, but May and June are the months with the most passing species, according to Tenerife's tourist board (whale and dolphin watching).

Water parks. All open daily: from June, Acua Water Park in Corralejo and the Aquapark in Costa Teguise drop their closing days (Acua opening hours; water parks). At Aqualand Maspalomas the dated online ticket on its own website starts at €32, against €41 at the gate and on the booking platforms: buy direct.

Wind. June's trade wind is a foretaste of the July and August windsurfing and kitesurfing season at Pozo Izquierdo, Sotavento and El Médano. Summer waves are small, good for learning (surfing in Fuerteventura).

Stars and peaks. It is Milky Way core season, although with sunsets around 21:00 night comes late. To walk on Teide and in the hills, set off early: they close when there is a fire alert.
