What's the weather like in the Canary Islands in July: south, north, east and summits

In July the Azores high sits far to the north and the trade wind reaches its peak frequency: 70% of days, against 45% in January. The temperature inversion that keeps the humidity capped shows up in 97% of weather-balloon soundings in July and August: identical days, one after another.

Tenerife South and Santa Cruz de Tenerife each get 19.8 clear days, and Santa Cruz 10.9 hours of sunshine a day, the best figure for any coast at any time of year. Tenerife North airport, on the La Laguna plateau, stops at 24.7 °C with 10.7 days of fog, its mistiest month. La Palma and El Hierro hover around 7 hours of sun and 25 °C.

On the summits, July is the warmest month: Izaña, at 2,369 m, reaches 23.0 °C by day and 14.0 °C at night, with 25% humidity. When Saharan air moves in, the heat and the calima (dust haze) are felt more at altitude than on the beach: they spoil the views of Teide or Roque Nublo and bring forest closures because of the fire risk.

Sea temperature in July: can you swim?

Yes, and it gets a little better every week. The sea keeps warming: 21.7 °C off Lanzarote, 21.8 °C off Fuerteventura, 22.0 °C off Gran Canaria, 22.2 °C off Tenerife and 22.6 °C off El Hierro. It isn't the warmest water of the year: in September and October it reaches 23–24 °C, and even in November the south of Tenerife (22.6 °C) is warmer than in July.

Top of the packing list is sun protection: AEMET records UV indices in the Canaries above the 9–11 of a summer on mainland Spain. Pack light long sleeves for boat trips and a fleece if you're going up Teide at night: 14 °C on average at 2,369 m, less in the wind.

Where to go in the Canary Islands in July

It depends on whether the wind is your friend or your enemy. For kitesurfing and windsurfing, Pozo Izquierdo, Sotavento and El Médano. For a calm beach, the sheltered leeward coasts of southern Tenerife, south-west Gran Canaria and southern La Gomera, where the trade wind doesn't whip up the sea and the whale-watching boats operate. To escape the heat, La Palma and El Hierro. More pointers in which island to choose.

Things to do in the Canary Islands in July: festivals and events

  • Windsurfing World Cups. The PWA tour runs its three Canary events back to back: Pozo Izquierdo in the first half of July, Sotavento in the second and El Médano from late July into early August. Watching is free, and it also tells you which beaches are too windy to lie on.
  • Virgen del Carmen, 16 July. Seaborne processions in the fishing harbours, from La Graciosa to Mogán and Arguineguín.
  • Romería de San Benito, La Laguna. A traditional pilgrimage festival on the second Sunday of July.
  • Grape harvest. Lanzarote opens the northern hemisphere's harvest in early July; Fuerteventura follows in mid-July.
  • Fiestas de la Rama, Agaete. They start on 25 July; the big day comes in August.

The Bajadas of the Virgen de los Reyes (El Hierro, every four years) and the Virgen de las Nieves (La Palma, every five) don't fall in the next few summers.

What's in season: wind, whales, water parks and stars

Wind and waves. July and August are the kitesurf and windsurf season; for surfing, small waves, good for learning (surfing in Fuerteventura).

Whales and dolphins. The resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins of south-west Tenerife can be seen all year round (whale watching in Tenerife). Swimming with wild cetaceans is illegal: swim stops take place well away from the animals.

Water parks. All open daily, with the longest hours of the year: both Aqualands stay open until 18:00 in July and August (water parks).
