The Canary Islands in February have much the same weather as January, with a bit more sunshine: a high of 22 °C in south Tenerife, 21 °C on Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, nights of 14–15 °C and two or three days of rain in the south and east. What changes is the sea, which drops to 18.3–19.8 °C, the coldest of the year along with March.

The mood changes too: this is the month of carnival, Los Indianos and the almond blossom.

Canary Islands weather in February: south, north, east and peaks

South Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Tenerife South records a high of 22.0 °C and a low of 15.0 °C, with 20 mm over 2 days and almost 7 hours of sunshine: the warmest south in the archipelago. Gran Canaria airport, on the east coast, reaches 21.2 °C with 3 days of rain.

North. Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 21.2 °C and 35 mm over almost 4 days. La Palma airport gets 57 mm over 4 days and 5.2 hours of sunshine. At Tenerife North, at 632 m, it is 16.7 °C by day, 10 °C at night and 7 days of rain: the La Laguna plateau in February calls for an umbrella.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The driest (16–18 mm) and sunniest: Lanzarote gets up to 7.1 hours of sunshine a day. Cooler nights: 14.3 °C on Lanzarote.

El Hierro and La Gomera. El Hierro keeps the mildest nights (16.4 °C), with 38 mm. There are no AEMET climate normals for La Gomera.

Teide. At Izaña this is the wettest and snowiest month: 67 mm and 2.5 days of snow, with a high of 8 °C and a low of 1.3 °C. In icy conditions you need winter gear and the cable car may stop (Teide).

Sea temperature in February: can you swim?

You can, but it is the coolest swim of the year: 18.3 °C around Lanzarote, 18.4 °C around Fuerteventura, 19.0 °C at Maspalomas, 19.4 °C at Los Cristianos and 19.8 °C off El Hierro. For young children, warmer water is a better bet: Siam Park (about 24 °C) and Aqualava (pools heated with geothermal energy) stay open all winter (water parks).

What to pack: summer clothes for the day, a jumper for the evening (about 15 °C on the coast), a costume if you are going to the carnival nights, and proper winter clothes for Teide or the Roque de los Muchachos.
