To get to Lobos Island you need two separate things: the permit from the Cabildo (the island council), which is free, and the boat from Corralejo harbour. Permit first, since that's what has limited places, then the boat. Lobos is a volcanic islet of about 4.7 km², 2 km off the northern tip of Fuerteventura, with no roads and no hotels.

It's worth it for walking between lava and sand, swimming from a shallow beach and snorkelling. Don't choose it if you want facilities: there's one restaurant and no shops.

Lobos Island permit: how to get it, step by step

The permit (Lobos Pass) is managed by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. It's free, personal, non-transferable and completely separate from the boat: the ticket doesn't get you the permit, and the permit doesn't get you a seat on the boat. The rangers ask to see it when you land.

  1. Go to the Cabildo's official website, lobospass.com.
  2. Apply for the permit 5 days before your visit, when applications open (the Ferry Isla de Lobos website says 3; what lobospass.com says is what counts). If your day is full, keep trying over the following days.
  3. Choose one of the two slots: morning, 10:00 to 14:00, or afternoon, 14:00 to 18:00.
  4. Say who's travelling: adult, minor or baby (under 3). According to Ferry Isla de Lobos, each application covers up to 3 places; for bigger groups, make several.
  5. You'll get an email with a link; the pass shows as "not active" until your slot begins, which is normal. Keep it on your phone.

The limit is 200 people on the island at any one time, according to the natural park's management plan; other sources speak of 400 a day across the two slots.

If you'd rather skip the paperwork, Naviera Nortour will arrange it when you buy your ticket for €2, which only covers the admin. In summer the morning slots go fast; the afternoon usually has much more availability, even for the next day outside the peak season.

Lobos Island ferry: prices, timetable and operators

The regular boats leave from Corralejo harbour and take about 20 minutes. There are two operators, Naviera Nortour and Ferry Isla de Lobos, and both charge the same: €17 return for adults, €11 for ages 4 to 11, free for under-4s. Canary Islands residents pay €14 and €9.

Ferry Isla de Lobos's winter season runs from mid-September to mid-June; in summer it goes up to nine sailings, with an extra return at 18:15. Timetables change with the season: check each operator's live timetable in the week you travel. Nortour's ticket office is at the harbour entrance, opposite the La Lonja bar.

Líneas Romero doesn't run a regular Corralejo–Lobos ferry, even if older guides say it does: its routes are La Graciosa and Playa Blanca–Corralejo. There's also a water taxi run by Corralejo Charter, with no published fare for visitors.

The ticket costs €17 at the ticket office, on GetYourGuide and on Tiqets: the platform saves you the queue, not the permit. GetYourGuide also has a return speedboat from €16. How to get to Lobos Island from Corralejo, by car or from Lanzarote

You can't reach Lobos by car: there are no roads and no visitor vehicles, so park in Corralejo and board on foot. By bus, Tiadhe's L6 links Puerto del Rosario with Corralejo for €3.40, every half hour Monday to Saturday. The town itself is covered in Corralejo and its dunes.

From Lanzarote, Líneas Romero sells "Lobos a tu aire" (Lobos at your own pace) from Playa Blanca at 09:30: ferry to Corralejo and boat to Lobos, about 8 hours, €59 for adults and €38 for children. Independently, take any Playa Blanca–Corralejo ferry (25–35 minutes) and then the Lobos boat: more in island hopping and Líneas Romero.

What to see on Lobos Island

The name comes from the lobos marinos, or "sea wolves": the monk seals that lived here until they were hunted out, and are now remembered by a few statues. There was once a Roman purple-dye workshop, and the first permanent human presence was the Punta Martiño lighthouse, from 1865.

The circular trail: 7.4 km and about 2 hours

The official route leaves from the quay, passes the Las Lagunitas salt marsh and the Marrajo salt pans, climbs to the Punta Martiño lighthouse and returns via El Puertito. It's 7.4 km, about 2 hours and barely 22 m of climbing. The ascent of Montaña La Caldera, the highest point at 127 m, is a separate detour that the official trail sheet doesn't time.

The full loop, La Caldera and a swim only just fit into four hours. Choose: either the lighthouse, or the beach and snorkelling. More routes in hiking in the Canary Islands.

Playa de la Concha and El Puertito: swimming and snorkelling

Playa de la Concha (or La Calera) has calm, shallow water, good for children. El Puertito, 10 minutes' walk from the quay, is a cluster of fewer than ten fishermen's houses with natural rock pools, where you'll find the best snorkelling on the island. Bring your own mask and snorkel.

That's also where the island's only restaurant is, with few tables. Don't count on it: bring all the water and food you need for the day, because there are no shops at all.

Surfing on Lobos: La Derecha

La Derecha de Lobos is a wave of 300 to 500 metres that the tourist office bills as the longest in the Canaries. It works from October to March, breaks over reef (wear reef boots) and is an hour's walk from the quay; Nortour carries your board for free. More in surfing in Fuerteventura.

Lobos Island rules

The island is divided into exclusion, restricted-use, moderate-use and general-use zones; the map is at lobospass.com/info. Bring a cap, sun cream and more than enough water for four hours.

Lobos Island catamarans and other boat trips

The catamarans leave Corralejo with drinks, snorkelling or lunch. Before booking, check the listing to see whether they land on Lobos or just anchor off the coast: if you go ashore, you still need your own permit.

Our pick

1

The ferry on your own

€17, the same as at the ticket office; the cheapest option if you already have the permit and want to walk.

2

Catamaran with snorkelling

Four hours with drinks and gear, for swimming more than walking.

3

Catamaran with lunch

Food on board: there are no shops on Lobos.

4

Speedboat

Snorkelling and volcano views from €35; a livelier ride than a catamaran.

5

Ferry plus snorkelling

The regular boat with snorkelling gear, from €27.

With several days in the north, combine Lobos with the dunes, El Cotillo or a trip to La Graciosa from Lanzarote. The rest of the island is in our Fuerteventura guide.

Do you need a permit to visit Lobos Island?

Yes. It's a free permit from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, applied for at lobospass.com, for a morning (10:00–14:00) or afternoon (14:00–18:00) slot, with a maximum of 200 people on the island at once. Without it you can't go ashore.

How far ahead can you apply for the Lobos permit?

Applications open 5 days before your visit. In summer the morning slots sell out quickly; if your day is full, keep checking over the following days.

How much is the ferry to Lobos Island?

€17 return for adults and €11 for children aged 4 to 11, with both operators; under-4s travel free. Canary Islands residents pay €14 and €9.

Does the Lobos ferry include the permit?

No, they're separate. Naviera Nortour will arrange it for €2 when you buy your ticket, but the permit is free and you can apply for it yourself.

How long does it take to walk round Lobos Island?

The official circular trail is 7.4 km and takes about 2 hours. If you also want to climb La Caldera and have a swim, the four-hour slot is tight.

Can you get to Lobos from Lanzarote?

Yes, via Corralejo: the Playa Blanca–Corralejo ferry and then the boat to Lobos, or the Líneas Romero excursion from Playa Blanca (about 8 hours).
