Fuerteventura is the Canary island where people surf most: according to the Canary Islands tourist spending survey, 6.9% of its visitors go surfing and 2.4% windsurfing, three times the Canary average for surfing. The tourist office talks of 48 protected spots. You'll read "the Hawaii of Europe" on school and agency websites; it's a marketing slogan that the official tourism website doesn't use.

The key to getting it right is the season. From October to April the Atlantic ground swell rolls in and the northern reefs start working. From May to September the trade wind rules: small waves for beginners, and the southern beaches full of sails and kites.

Fuerteventura surf spots: northern reefs and beginner beaches

The north coast: reefs for experienced surfers

  • El Hierro (Majanicho): the tourist office calls it the island's most famous spot. Two peaks over volcanic reef, from September to May. Not for beginners.
  • La Derecha de Lobos: a right-hander of 300 to 500 metres on Lobos Island, which the tourist office bills as the longest wave in the Canaries. Best from October to March, an hour's walk from the quay and with a Cabildo permit to go ashore; we explain it in the Lobos Island guide.
  • El Cotillo: a beach break south of the village and more breaks to the north, past the Tostón lighthouse. There are schools for surfing, kitesurfing, SUP, windsurfing and wing foiling.

On the northern reefs, reef boots aren't optional: the bottom is lava. Corralejo is the natural base for this coast; the town, its dunes and how to get around without a car are in our Corralejo guide.

Beaches for learning

The Corralejo schools have no fixed beach: they decide each morning where to go based on the sea and the wind (Flag Beach says it works at more than ten). You learn where there are small waves and sand; if your family wants to sunbathe nearby, ask beforehand which beach you're going to.

Surfing at La Pared or in Jandía? Some schools teach in the south, but the west coast is open and exposed: there, only with a school. The south is covered in Jandía and Cofete.

Best time to surf in Fuerteventura

The tourist office sums it up like this: the best waves for experienced surfers come from October to April; summer is for beginners. The trade wind, on the other hand, blows on almost seven days in ten in July and on fewer than half in January, which is why kitesurfing and windsurfing live in spring and summer.

September and May give you a bit of both. The weather month by month is in Canary Islands weather, with October for the start of the wave season and July for peak wind.

Water temperature and wetsuits

Fuerteventura's water is among the coolest in the Canaries: the western islands run about a degree warmer all year round. Monthly average sea-surface temperatures at Corralejo (satellite data):

Time of year Water temperature
December–January 19–20 °C
February–April 18–19 °C, the coldest of the year
May–June 20–21 °C
July–August 22–22.5 °C
September–October 23 °C, the warmest of the year
November about 21.5 °C

The schools include a wetsuit all year round, so there's no need to bring your own.

Surf school in Corralejo: lesson prices and group sizes

The Corralejo schools all work in much the same way: they pick you up in a van, take you to the beach of the day, run through theory and a warm-up on the sand and drop you back at your hotel. The price of a day is very similar; what changes is how many students each instructor has, and there the difference can be twofold. With four, they correct every wave; with eight, you watch the lesson from a distance.

School Direct price Group size What sets it apart
Aloha Surf Academy 1 lesson €70; 3 lessons €210; 5 lessons €320 max. 6 per instructor in Corralejo since 2011; pick-up, surfskate training, head instructor speaks 6 languages
Corralejo Surf School 1 day €50; 3 days €135 not published van transfer, theory and safety briefing, drop-off at your hotel
Surf Passion School 1 lesson €50; private €80 (1 person) or €120 (2); "surfari" €30 max. 4 per instructor instructor qualified by the Canary Islands Surfing Federation (Federación Canaria de Surf)
Flag Beach Watersports Centre only in its booking system kite: 4 per instructor on the beach, 2 in the water surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing and SUP; VDWS centre with IKO instructors; transfer, gear and insurance in the packages

Beyond these websites, the market ranges from €30 to €50 a day and from about €190–215 for a five-day course. On the platforms, lessons of 3.5 to 4 hours start from €44–54. The actual lesson length, insurance and minimum age vary from school to school: ask before you pay, especially for kids' surf lessons. The full comparison is in Corralejo surf schools.

Kitesurfing, windsurfing and wing foiling in Fuerteventura

In summer the island changes sport. The tourist office highlights three wind spots:

  • Flag Beach (Corralejo): sandy bottom, suitable for all levels, best in spring and summer with northerly, north-westerly or north-easterly winds. It's the beach for learning to kite in the north.
  • Playa del Burro (Corralejo): needs some experience, has volcanic reef, is sailed at low or mid tide and has no facilities whatsoever.
  • Sotavento (Costa Calma): the strongest, most consistent wind on the island in spring and summer; it can top 50 knots from the north-east. There's one zone for learning and another for advanced riders next to the main break.

René Egli's centre has been at Sotavento since 1984 (rene-egli.com), with windsurfing, kitesurfing, wing foiling and e-foiling. The Sotavento lagoon only fills on big tides; the centre publishes a calendar every year so you know which days there's a lagoon.

The Sotavento World Cup

Every summer, in July, Playa Barca (Sotavento) hosts the Fuerteventura Windsurf & Wingfoil World Cup, organised by René Egli's team with Meliá, Pájara town council and the Cabildo. At the last edition the disciplines were windsurf freestyle and slalom, counting towards the PWA world tour, and wingfoil, for the GWA. The tourist office still uses the old name, windsurfing and kiteboarding, but kite wasn't among the disciplines. Watching from the beach is free; on those days Sotavento is at its windiest and busiest, so it's no place for anyone who just wants to lie on a towel. Dates at fuerteventura-worldcup.org.

Surf safety: reef, currents and flags

If you already surf, don't paddle out alone at a reef you don't know: the first time, go with a school or a local guide.
