If you're looking for a jet ski in Lanzarote, it all happens at two spots on the south coast: Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen and Marina Rubicón in Playa Blanca. That's where the guided safaris, parascending, banana boat and flyboard go from. The company with its own base at both is Paracraft Lanzarote, operating since 1998; plenty of agencies and websites resell its trips.

Diving starts at Playa Chica, surfing is at Famara, and the catamaran to Papagayo and the submarine leave from Puerto Calero.

Jet ski in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca: the two departure points

Puerto del Carmen (Playa Chica). Routes head south-west, past Puerto Calero and Playa Quemada, and the longer ones reach Papagayo: 20-minute, 40- and 60-minute rides and the 2-hour safari. There's no jet ski base in Costa Teguise, Arrecife or Puerto Calero; agencies pick you up from hotels there and bring you to this departure point.

Playa Blanca (Marina Rubicón). From the pontoon you can do the roughly 40-minute tour to the Papagayo coves and the safari towards Pechiguera lighthouse. It's the quickest way to see Papagayo from the water if you're staying in the south.

Watch out: the "Jet Ski Safari Arrecife" sold by one agency leaves from Puerto del Carmen, not Arrecife. In our Lanzarote jet ski review we look at the operator and the companies reselling its places.

Jet ski Lanzarote prices: per jet ski and per person

Paracraft only shows its prices inside its booking system, so there's no published direct rate. These are prices from agencies reselling the same trips, per jet ski (one or two people):

Trip (agency price) Price per jet ski
20 minutes in Puerto del Carmen €60
40 minutes to Playa Quemada €100
60 minutes €145
2-hour safari to Papagayo €289
2-hour safari towards Playa Honda and Arrecife €250
40-minute tour to Papagayo from Marina Rubicón €130–160

As each jet ski takes two, split the cost: €100 for 40 minutes is €50 each. On GetYourGuide, the island's most-reviewed jet ski ride starts at €70 and is rated 4.7 out of 5 from more than a thousand reviews.

From July to September, book at least four days ahead.

In Spain, hiring a jet ski without a qualification is only legal on a marked circuit or on a guided group excursion (Real Decreto 259/2002). To ride solo you need a navigation licence or skipper's qualification. In Lanzarote, the operator with its own base doesn't offer solo hire without a licence: what you book is a safari following an instructor.

  • Age: drivers from 18, or 16 with written parental permission. Paracraft's safaris require age 16; one agency takes passengers from 8.
  • Weight: 120 kg maximum on a single jet ski and 150 kg combined on a double. On windy days they may tighten the limit.
  • Kit: life jacket compulsory for driver and passenger; the operator requires a T-shirt underneath. Insurance is included.
  • Hours: daylight only, from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset.
  • Wildlife: on a jet ski you can't go within 500 m of dolphins or whales.

Parascending, banana boat and flyboard

In Puerto del Carmen, as well as jet skis, Paracraft offers parascending, Crazy Bull, Crazy UFO, banana boat (€20 per person) and packages combining a jet ski with a buggy and parascending. In Playa Blanca there's parascending, Crazy UFO and flyboard (from age 16, 20 minutes).

Parascending is open to ages 8 (with an adult) up to 75: about 10 minutes in the air at 80–100 m, and friends can come along on the boat. Maximum weight: 100 kg solo, 160 kg tandem and 180 kg for three. Crazy Bull takes children from 8 and Crazy UFO from 10.

Diving in Lanzarote: Playa Chica and the Museo Atlántico

Playa Chica, in Puerto del Carmen, is a shore-dive site where many try-dives take place. Safari Diving is based there, with more than 40 years behind it, PADI and BSAC, and free pick-up from hotels in Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero. According to the dive centres, angel sharks are seen almost daily from November to March: a critically endangered shark for which the Canaries are a refuge.

The Museo Atlántico lies off Las Coloradas, next to Marina Rubicón: more than 300 sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor at 12–14 m deep and about 300 m from the shore, which can only be visited by diving from a dive centre's boat. It no longer appears on the website or in the ticket shop of the Art, Culture and Tourism Centres (CACT); dive centres charge from €48 for certified divers and €149 for the beginners' programme (pool session, shore dive and boat dive to a maximum of 12 m, about 5 hours). Ask whether the price includes museum entry.

Spanish law allows diving from age 8 (6 m maximum until age 9), requires insurance and demands one instructor per participant on try-dives. Full details, island by island, in diving in the Canary Islands.

Surfing at Famara

Famara is Lanzarote's surf beach: more than 5 km of sand inside the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park, with bodyboarding, windsurfing and kitesurfing too. Calima Surf, in Caleta de Famara since 1996, offers lessons from €50 a day, 3- to 5-day beginner courses from €195 and private lessons from €150, and takes children from age 8. You can get there by bus: line 20 from Arrecife or 31 from Costa Teguise. If surfing is the reason for your trip, compare with surfing in Fuerteventura, the island where the most visitors surf.

Papagayo catamaran, submarine and more in Puerto Calero

Catamaran to Papagayo. Catlanza sails from Puerto Calero: 4 hours, €85 adults, €60 teenagers and €50 children, with drinks, food, snorkelling, kayaks and paddleboards. Hotel pick-up or free parking in Puerto Calero, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Líneas Romero sells its "I Love Papagayo" trip from Puerto del Carmen.

Submarine. Submarine Safaris, in Puerto Calero, dives to 30 m with 44 seats and 22 portholes. On its website it costs €61.75 for adults and €39.90 for children aged 2 to 14; under-2s can't go on board. There's a free bus from Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. On GetYourGuide it's from €65, so it works out slightly cheaper on the operator's website.

Dolphins. Lanzarote has very few boats licensed for whale and dolphin watching, between five and seven. If seeing them is a priority, the whale and dolphin watching guide tells you which islands are worth it.

Tips before you book

  • Check the departure point in the listing: Playa Chica or Marina Rubicón. The 2-hour safari from Puerto del Carmen and the 40-minute tour from Marina Rubicón reach the same Papagayo; the second is shorter and costs half as much.
  • For more ideas, head back to the Lanzarote guide; for a calm day on a boat, the ferry to La Graciosa leaves from Órzola, in the north.
