Viator reviews: cancellation, refunds and what it sells on each Canary Island

Viator is legit for excursions with pick-up on Tenerife: it belongs to Tripadvisor, cancels free of charge up to 24 hours before as a rule and tells you which company runs the trip. For park tickets, the official website is the better bet.

Viator reviews in short: for a coach trip to Teide with hotel pick-up, a stargazing night or a catamaran on Tenerife, it is a serious platform with plenty of choice. For park tickets it is not the best option: the official website or another platform will sell you the same for less.

We have no agreement with Viator and earn nothing if you book with them; links to their website are ordinary links, with no affiliate code.

What Viator is, and how it relates to Tripadvisor

Viator, Inc. is a Delaware company based in Needham (Massachusetts) that describes itself as "a Tripadvisor company". They are the same business, with the two brands' teams now merged, and the charge on your card statement may appear as "Viator/Tripadvisor/Owl Payments".

Viator does not run excursions. It acts as agent for each local company, which pays it a commission after the activity, and it names the operator on the listing ("Supplied by…"). Its website is viator.com.

Viator in the Canary Islands, island by island

Tenerife is where Viator is strong, with more than 600 results. The standouts are excursions with transport: Teide and Masca from €57, sunset and stars on Teide from €40 (€65 with pick-up) and the trip to La Gomera from €110. At sea, an eco catamaran from €36 and whale and dolphin watching from €25. Tickets are the weak spot: there is no Loro Parque and no Twin Ticket, and for Siam Park it only offers a third party's "fast entry" ticket at €60.

Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have destination pages, but Viator gives no reliable figures for how many activities it sells: titles such as "the 20 best" or "top 10" are a template, not the size of the catalogue. Nor are there figures for La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. If you are heading to the western islands, the platform with a counted range on all seven islands is Civitatis.

Adult prices checked on 2 October 2026. They may vary by date; each site confirms the final price.

Siam Park costs €44 on its own website and on the platforms in the table. The Viator product at €60 charges €16 extra for "fast entry", which the official dated ticket already gives you: you walk up to the turnstile with the QR code on your phone.

For excursions, Viator shows the total price including taxes, and the operator must flag any extra payments on the spot; compare with the website of the operator named on the listing. If you pay in another currency, Viator applies its own exchange rate and your bank may add fees. The "Lowest Price Guarantee" badge comes with conditions: read them before relying on it.

Viator cancellation, refunds and customer service

You pay the full amount by card when you book, unless the listing says otherwise; on part of the catalogue you can reserve now and pay later. The general rule is free cancellation up to 24 hours before; if the activity has no start time, the deadline usually falls at 23:59 two days before. You cancel on Viator's own website.

Customer service is by chat and by phone in Spain (+34 911 776 743).

Viator reviews: is it legit?

Yes, as a company. On Trustpilot it scores 4.4 out of 5 from 332,291 reviews, 11% of them one-star, and it replies to 80% of the negative ones. Reviewers praise the guides and the range. The complaints are recurring: late notice of changes, last-minute cancellations by the operator, rigid refunds and support that is hard to reach.

Be careful with each excursion's score: it combines reviews from Viator, which only people who booked can write, and from Tripadvisor, where anyone can post without having bought anything. And the default order takes into account what Viator earns on each product: sort by rating or price before you choose.

The good

  • Wide range on Tenerife, with hotel pick-up.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before as a rule.
  • Names the company that runs each excursion.

The not so good

  • Siam Park dearer than on the park's own website; no Loro Parque.
  • Scores mixed with unverified reviews.
  • Default order influenced by commission.

Who it suits, and the alternatives

It suits you if you already use Tripadvisor, want coach excursions with pick-up on Tenerife or collect its rewards credit. It is available in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Japanese, but not Chinese. It is not for you if you are buying park tickets.

GetYourGuide has a big range of boat trips and excursions and sells the parks at the official price with 24-hour cancellation; Tiqets focuses on tickets. We earn a commission from both if you book through this site, and you pay the same. Civitatis is the option for the western islands and Spanish-speaking guides. All of them are in operators and platforms.
