Tenerife operators: who really runs each excursion and what to know

In Tenerife almost everything costs the same on the operator's website as on the booking platforms. What changes is who is skippering the boat or driving, what licence they hold and what happens if you cancel.

There is no one big excursion company in Tenerife: there are dozens of small operators and a few large ones, and many platform listings don't say who actually provides the service. Here they are grouped by activity, with the useful fact and the typical mistake. Company-by-company profiles are in our sister guide: https://tenerife.org.es/en/operators/

We earn commission from GetYourGuide and Tiqets, and we'll still say it plainly: in Tenerife the platforms don't sell for less than the operator. When they win, it's on the cancellation policy.

Whale-watching boats: who runs each boat

The Canary register lists 64 authorised boats in Puerto Colón, 22 in Los Gigantes and 11 in Los Cristianos, and the trading names are confusing:

  • Travelin' Lady (Travelin' Lady S.L.), Los Cristianos: an hour and a half from €27.90 on its website; the Tenerife product with the most reviews on GetYourGuide.
  • The best-selling "Eco No-Chase" trip belongs to Mar de Ons (Mar Borondon S.L.), in Los Cristianos: €25 online, no swim. Bonadea II–Diomedea, which it gets confused with, is a 6-seat RIB in Puerto Colón.
  • Flipper Uno, in Los Gigantes, owns both the "pirate ship" and the speedboat. On its own website it talks of guaranteed sightings; on GetYourGuide, of sightings that can't be guaranteed.
  • Royal Delfin sells "submarine vision", but it's a catamaran with windows below the waterline. To actually go underwater you need Submarine Safaris, at Marina Amarilla (San Miguel), from €57.95 online.

Watch out for: "eco" and "no-chase" are slogans, because chasing whales and dolphins is banned for everyone. You can recognise a licence by the yellow Barco Azul flag, which has the licensed period printed in blue. More in whales in Tenerife and whale and dolphin watching.

Teide: Volcano Teide and the summit permit

Behind Volcano Teide is Teleférico del Pico de Teide S.A.: the cable car (€43 return, online only, free changes until 18:00 the day before), excursions, observatory visits and the Altavista refuge.

Watch out for: that company doesn't issue the summit permit. The cable car stops at 3,555 m, and the trail up to 3,715 m needs a permit from Tenerife ON, the island council's booking platform, which opens 56 days ahead and costs €15 for non-Canarian visitors in the slots between 09:00 and 17:00. The details are in our Mount Teide guide.

Siam Park and Loro Parque, from the same group, don't change price depending on where you buy; the difference is that on GetYourGuide you can cancel free up to 24 hours before and on Tiqets the ticket can't be refunded or changed. With Aqualand and Jungle Park (Aspro Parks) it's the other way round: their website charges €2 less per adult and their ticket for both parks costs €51, while the platforms' combined tickets are around €69–73. Buggies, quads and paragliding

Buggies and quads. The real names are Buggy Safari Tenerife, Quads4Fun, Ultimate Quads y Buggies, Buggy Teide (in the north) and Club Canary; "Quad Adventure" is just a product title. The price is per vehicle (buggies from €179, quads between €105 and €125), not per person. Watch out for: on Teide you drive on the road only, because leaving the tarmac is banned in the national park. Cancellation terms range from 48 hours to a month depending on the company.

Paragliding. Overfly Tenerife, Kangaroo Tandem, Day Dream, Happy Fly and, in the north, Enminube, between €90 and €200 a flight; all of them publish their active-tourism registration number. Watch out for: Izaña, the classic take-off inside the national park, can no longer be used; if you're offered a flight "from Teide", ask for the take-off point in writing.

Stargazing and the observatory

Volcano Teide sells the daytime observatory visit (€21, free from 8 to 16), Teide By Night (€89, the same tour many agencies resell) and Sunset & Stars (€159). Night Skies Tenerife is the independent option, from €47.50 to €85. Watch out for: the observatory and almost all of Volcano Teide's night trips don't take children under 8. More in Canary Islands stargazing.

Ferries and buses

Ferries. Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària Canarias (formerly Naviera Armas) sail to La Gomera from Los Cristianos in about 50 minutes, from €39.74 and €42. Watch out for: tickets of about €10 are for residents. To Gran Canaria, Fred. Olsen docks at Agaete and Baleària at the port of Las Palmas. Reviews of Fred. Olsen and Baleària Canarias.

Buses. TITSA charges by distance; the Ten+ card (€2) makes every journey cheaper and can be shared, and the €10 and €50 tourist passes are personal. Watch out for: the "free buses" are for residents. Neither GetYourGuide nor Tiqets sells airport transfers in Tenerife.

Our rating of Tenerife's operators

Tenerife operators

Variety
5/5Boats, the volcano, parks, the air and the night sky, with trips from three harbours.
Price transparency
3/5Parks and Volcano Teide charge the same everywhere, but per-vehicle and per-person prices get mixed up, and many crossed-out prices are the operator's own promotions.
Licences
3.5/5Boats have a flag and a public register and paragliding firms their TA-4 number; buggy websites show none.
Ease of booking
4/5Almost everything can be booked online with 24 h cancellation; permits (summit, Masca, El Pijaral) go through separate systems.
Sustainability
3/5Only 13 whale-watching companies have signed Turismo de Tenerife's sustainability charter; orcas in captivity and growing pressure on Teide.

The good

  • Official prices on the platforms too, with flexible cancellation.
  • Boat licences you can check in a minute.
  • A huge choice from Los Cristianos, Puerto Colón and Los Gigantes.

The not so good

  • Trading names that hide the real operator.
  • "Eco", "no-chase" and "guaranteed" with no official backing.
  • New permits and fees that tours don't always explain.

Booking direct or on a platform

Direct: the cable car without a tour, Aqualand and Jungle Park, the ferries and any resident rate. On a platform: when the price matches and you want free cancellation until the day before, checking the provider's name first. We compare the platforms in GetYourGuide and Tiqets, and the rest of the Canary Islands operators in operators.

How do I know if a whale-watching boat is licensed?

It must fly the yellow Barco Azul flag where you can see it, with the licensed period in blue, and appear on the official Canary register with a code starting CT-38-4.

Is Volcano Teide the official cable car company?

Yes: it's the brand of Teleférico del Pico de Teide S.A., the only company that runs it. The summit permit, on the other hand, is issued by Tenerife ON.
