The camels you see crossing the Maspalomas dunes belong to Camello Safari Dunas, not to Camel Safari Park La Baranda. La Baranda is in the Fataga ravine, about 12 km from Playa del Inglés; at the moment its official website returns a server error and at least one reseller marks it as "not available", although it still has listings on the big booking platforms. For the dunes, book Camello Safari Dunas; for La Baranda, phone before you pay.

Camello Safari Dunas: the camel ride through the Maspalomas dunes

It is a 30- to 35-minute ride in a dromedary caravan. It sets off from a group of tents on the east bank of the Fataga ravine, a few hundred metres from La Charca; the company gives its address as Calle Oceanía s/n.

Rides run from 09:15 to 14:15; in the afternoon the animals rest and the reception is closed. The usual maximum weight is 100 kg per person.

You book at camellosafari.com by paying a deposit online, and the rest is paid at reception.

Getting there and parking

Around ten Global bus lines stop at the Faro de Maspalomas, including line 30 from Las Palmas and line 66 from the airport. There is no dedicated car park: there are unmarked spaces on the straight next to car park P, near the steps down, and they fill up early. The company itself recommends coming by taxi.

Camel Safari Park La Baranda, in the Fataga valley

La Baranda is on the road from Playa del Inglés to Fataga; the address quoted is Carretera hacia Fataga km 12, 35108 Fataga. It is not in Maspalomas or in the dunes: the ride goes through an inland valley full of palm trees.

Its website, camelsafarigrancanaria.com, does not load, and the opening times in circulation contradict each other (every day from 09:00 to 17:00, or Monday to Saturday). There is no public record of who owns the business, how many animals it has or whether it holds any animal-welfare certification.

According to one reseller, it offered a one-hour ride in a caravan of up to 30 camels, a Canarian meal and pick-up from hotels in the south for €42 per adult and €22 per child aged 3 to 10; other listings mention €20 for 30 minutes, or from €50 with tapas and a show. That reseller's reviews praise the pick-up, the gentle ride, the scenery and the host, and criticise the food and the fact that the rest of the excursion adds little.

Which one to book

  • Camels among the dunes, short and cheap: Camello Safari Dunas, €18, mornings. Combine it with the lighthouse and La Charca, 200 m apart.
  • A half-day with a meal and hotel pick-up: that was La Baranda's offer; phone to confirm it is running and what is included.
  • In the afternoon: there are no rides in the dunes after 14:15.

Animal welfare

Camello Safari Dunas sets a weight limit per rider and keeps the afternoons free so the animals can rest, which supporters of these rides point to. Critics argue that riding animals should not be a tourist attraction; the decision is up to each traveller.

The good

  • Afternoons off for the animals
  • Good bus links from the Faro

The not so good

  • No afternoon rides and no dedicated car park
  • La Baranda does not confirm it is still operating
  • The two companies get mixed up in searches

Alternatives

If the camels don't appeal, Palmitos Park is on the same road as Aqualand Maspalomas, and you can see the interior on Gran Canaria day trips. More in Gran Canaria and operators.
